Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, has vowed to stay true to his principles and not water down his agenda. He was sworn in by his political idol, Senator Bernie Sanders, who hailed Mamdani's victory as a political upset of historic proportions. But with detractors calling him radical and dangerous, and skeptics questioning the feasibility of his vision, Mamdani has a tough road ahead.
Mamdani's plan is simple yet bold: redistribute the city's wealth and make life more affordable in a metropolis known for its high cost of living. Political historian Kim Phillips-Fein from Columbia University argues that Mamdani's promises are not as radical as they may seem. "There's ample precedent for all of these within the city's history," she says, pointing to successful rent regulation and expansions of early childhood education in the past. "People have sometimes described these [promises] as being such dramatic things that have never been tried before, and that's just not true."
While there are undoubtedly obstacles, including a divided Democratic Party and a hostile right-wing media, Professor Phillips-Fein sees "great cause for hope" for Mamdani. She believes that the organizing efforts and forces that brought him into office will be crucial in determining his success and the depth of political change he can bring about.
