Nigeria is making a bold move, approving nearly $4.29 billion in major infrastructure projects, signaling a strong vote of confidence in its economic future. This investment wave, fueled entirely by private capital, is set to reshape the nation's landscape.
The Federal Executive Council has given the green light to three significant Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects. These include the Bakassi Deep Seaport, the Port of Ondo Deep Seaport, and the Katsina-Ala Hydropower Plant. These projects are all slated to be financed entirely by the private sector and will be overseen by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).
This influx of private funding represents a significant step, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 'Renewed Hope Agenda,' which prioritizes private sector participation to boost growth, competitiveness, and job creation.
Dr. Jobson Oseodion Ewalefoh, the Director-General of the ICRC, highlights that these investments reflect growing investor confidence, both foreign and domestic, in Nigeria's reform efforts. He attributes this to clearer policies, economic liberalization, and stronger regulatory institutions.
"These are decisive, multi-sectoral investment portfolios that directly address national needs," he stated.
The Bakassi Deep Seaport, valued at approximately $2.27 billion, is being developed under the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. It's envisioned as a new maritime gateway serving Nigeria's North Central and North East regions, and positioning the country as a logistics hub for West and Central Africa. This port is designed to handle larger vessels and will incorporate an industrial cluster and Free Trade Zone, potentially creating thousands of jobs and boosting regional trade.
The Port of Ondo Deep Seaport, valued at about $1.14 billion, also under the Marine and Blue Economy ministry, aims to unlock the South West's solid minerals and agro-allied exports, offering an alternative trade outlet and easing congestion at existing ports in Lagos.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Council also approved the $878 million Katsina-Ala Hydropower Plant, a 460-megawatt renewable energy project under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. This plant is expected to provide steady power to the national grid and stimulate economic activity in the North Central region. Ewalefoh described it as a strategic commitment to a cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy future.
This follows the earlier approval of three other projects in November, including the Port Harcourt International Airport concession, the Product Authentication and Tracking System, and the V-PASS biometric verification platform, which attracted an additional $230.9 million in private investment.
With these latest approvals, Nigeria has greenlit over 13 PPP projects in 2025 alone. These projects span healthcare, maritime systems, fisheries terminals, airports, and multiple hydropower plants. This underscores the administration's reliance on private capital to accelerate development.
Ewalefoh emphasizes that the consistent flow of approvals demonstrates confidence in the commission's mandate and signals Nigeria's commitment to attracting large-scale, privately funded infrastructure projects.
