In a bold move that has implications for many businesses, Microsoft has recently tightened security protocols within the Intune platform. As of January 19, organizations and users who have not timely updated their mobile work applications find themselves unable to access their business emails, highlighting the urgency of this change.
This development is not entirely unexpected; Microsoft has been signaling this shift for a while. Now, however, the consequences are hitting home for end users, as reported by Neowin. The crux of this update focuses on Intune's Mobile Application Management system. Moving forward, Microsoft will only permit apps that utilize recent SDK versions or are correctly packaged with the latest Intune wrapper. Any applications that fail to meet these standards will be automatically blocked, affecting not just custom or internal applications but also widely used Microsoft apps like Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive—on both Android and iOS platforms—if they haven't been updated through the App Store or Play Store.
For Android users, the Intune Company Portal plays a pivotal role in this scenario. If this specific app hasn't been updated to a newer version, it can lead to other managed work apps on the same device refusing to launch. This means that a single missed update could disrupt the entire mobile work environment. On the iOS side, the focus shifts from the Company Portal to the SDK or wrapper utilized, which predominantly impacts organizations that develop their own line-of-business applications.
Recognizing the potential disruptions this change could cause, Microsoft has provided a generous transition period. Since September 2025, companies have been informed about this policy shift through the Microsoft 365 Message Center. Although December 15, 2025, was initially suggested as the date when these changes would take effect, enforcement began shortly thereafter. This ample lead time was designed to allow administrators and development teams enough opportunity to adjust their applications and policies accordingly.
Moreover, Microsoft differentiates between Android and iOS in how updates are managed. For Android, apps generally receive updates automatically once the Company Portal and at least one Microsoft app are updated. In contrast, iOS requires developers to proactively switch to new SDK or wrapper versions, which presents a significant risk of blockage if internal apps are not diligently maintained.
To help administrators navigate these new requirements, Microsoft has equipped them with specific tools designed to avert access issues. Conditional Launch policies enable the enforcement of minimum SDK versions, app versions, or Company Portal versions, allowing users to be alerted or even blocked ahead of time, preventing unexpected loss of access to essential work applications.
This situation underscores the growing importance of meticulous app and update management in the realm of mobile working.
