Li-Ning's Winter Olympic Spirit Show at Milan Fashion Week
The Chinese activewear brand Li-Ning is making a bold statement at Milan Fashion Week, showcasing its Winter Olympic-inspired collection. With a rich history dating back to 1990, Li-Ning has become a prominent player in the fashion industry, especially in China. Founded by a champion gymnast, the brand has a strong connection to the Olympic Games, serving as the official partner of the Chinese Olympic Committee.
This season, Li-Ning is leveraging its partnership to make a powerful statement in the city where the Winter Olympics begin on February 6th. The brand aims to boost its European presence and awareness, showcasing its unique blend of sports and fashion.
Colin Li, the brand's executive director and a second-generation member of the founding Li family, emphasizes the strategic nature of their runway shows. He states, 'For us, runway shows are never seasonal obligations; they are strategic statements. We choose to show when there is something meaningful to express, not simply something new to sell.'
The Milan show is a testament to this philosophy, focusing on performance and winter sports culture. The concept is rooted in Olympic traditions and winter sports inspiration, creating a runway environment that mimics an ice-and-snow competition arena. This immersive experience is a collaborative effort involving design teams, performance innovation teams, and brand archives.
The collection, titled 'The Athlete in All of Us,' features two distinct drops. The Li-Ning China (LNCN) collection pays homage to professional winter sports like snowboarding, skiing, and ice hockey, blending retro and archival influences with the popular 'bloke-core' aesthetics favored by TikTok users and Gen Zers.
The sportswear silhouettes draw inspiration from technical podium suits worn by athletes in red, winter neutrals, and aurora-inspired hues, reminiscent of the 2004 Athens Olympics. The collection also includes the Li-Ning Glory range, known for its utilitarian design and technical fabrics applied to everyday wear.
Key footwear styles include the Ranger, Furious Ranger, Wudao, Ling Long, and Ling Long Racer, catering to both winter performance and the chunky sneakers trend. The Chaoran model pays homage to the brand's founder, Li Ning, inspired by the shoes he wore during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Furthermore, the fall collection will introduce the Li-Ning Glory x Jackie Chan capsule collection, a collaboration between the Beijing-based firm and the renowned martial artist, actor, and filmmaker, which was first unveiled in 2020.
Li-Ning's global journey began at New York Fashion Week's China Day in 2018, and they have since hosted runway shows in international fashion capitals, including Paris in 2023, where they collaborated with artist Oscar Wang. With a strong presence in China and a growing international focus on Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Li-Ning continues to make its mark on the fashion world.
