Big news! We're thrilled to announce John Heitinga as our new First Team Assistant Coach, joining forces with Thomas Frank and the rest of the coaching staff. This is a move that promises to bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to our team.
John's coaching journey began in 2016 after he hung up his boots. He started honing his skills with Ajax's youth teams, and in January 2023, he stepped up to take interim charge of the senior side for the remainder of the season. Talk about a baptism by fire!
Next, he joined West Ham United as a First Team Assistant before being appointed as Liverpool’s Assistant Coach in July 2024. He played a key role in helping the Reds clinch the Premier League title last season. And this is the part most people miss... He then returned to Ajax to become Head Coach in May 2025.
But here's where it gets controversial... As a player, John was a force to be reckoned with, making over 400 club appearances for top teams like Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Everton, Fulham, and Hertha BSC. He wasn't just a club player; he was a national hero, earning 87 caps for the Netherlands and representing his country in numerous major tournaments.
Head Coach Thomas Frank had this to say: “John is a great addition to our coaching staff. His ability, personality, and character will add huge value both on and off the pitch. He had an impressive playing career across Europe – including five years in the Premier League – and with the Dutch national team. As a former defender, that will be one of his main responsibilities on the training pitch, and he brings great coaching and management experiences from all levels of the game, which will really help us moving forward.”
