Blockades Threaten Greece's Grocery Supply
The ongoing farmer blockades in Greece have disrupted the country's supply chain, causing significant challenges for the transportation and distribution of goods. These blockades, which have been in place for over a month, have severely impacted the flow of products between the north and south of the country. Bulgarian truck drivers are refusing to enter Greece due to fears of being trapped on highways, leading to a shortage of drivers and a shift towards Greek drivers by multinational companies.
The consequences of these blockades are far-reaching. The cost of transporting and distributing goods has increased by 10-25% compared to pre-November 30 rates. While supermarkets have not yet experienced shortages, they are facing significant delays in receiving raw materials and goods. Road trips that typically take around 6.5 hours, such as the Thessaloniki-Athens route, now last up to 11 hours.
The pressure on the market is evident in the rising fares for the Athens-Thessaloniki route, which have increased from around 600 euros to nearly 700 euros. This translates to an additional cost of approximately 100,000 to 200,000 euros per month for the supermarket sector, a burden that businesses are currently managing. However, market executives warn that this situation cannot sustain indefinitely.
If the blockades persist, the increased costs may eventually be passed on to consumers, adding to the existing climate of business uncertainty. The impact on mountain tourism destinations during the Christmas long weekend was less severe than anticipated, with Thessaly, Magnesia, and Trikala suffering the most significant losses. In contrast, Epirus and the Peloponnese regions remained relatively unaffected, according to local hoteliers' reports. Northern Greece also experienced only minor disruptions.
The blockades have highlighted the vulnerability of Greece's supply chain and the potential consequences for consumers and businesses alike. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the market will adapt and whether the increased costs will be absorbed or passed on to the final consumer.
